Registration and Installation

Do I need to register Calcul:8?

No. However various functions (such as output, the number of rows that can be processed, and QAN code verification) are restricted or disabled for unregistered software.

How do I install Calcul:8?

Calcul:8 can be downloaded from here. The download is a zip file which contains a self-extracting exe file which will install Calcul:8 and, if it is required, the Microsoft .net Framework 4.5.2.

How do I place an order for Calcul:8?

Click here to place an order. The cost is currently 350 plus VAT for an annual licence. We don't need purchase orders. A school only needs to order one licence.

A temporary unlock code will be issued once we have accepted your order. We do reserve the right to refuse orders. The temporary unlock code will be valid for 28 days, during which time the invoice for the unlock code must be paid. The full unlock code will be issued once payment of our invoice clears our account AND we've been able to identify it as your payment.

How do I pay?

We will send you an invoice which will contain a reference number. We accept electronic payments to our bank account, and would ask that your reference number (and optionally part of your school name) is used as the payment reference. Full details will be on our invoice.

We can accept cheques, but you're then dependent upon us getting to the bank and waiting for the payment to clear - electronic payments are better and faster. We don't currently have the facility to accept credit card payments, although we are looking at a variety of other payment options.

The full unlock code will be issued once payment of our invoice clears our account AND we've been able to match your payment to your invoice.

How do I apply an unlock code?

We send you an email containing the details you need to enter on the Apply Unlock Code screen, reached from the About Calcul:8 screen. You need to enter the details exactly as they are provided. Calcul:8 does a basic validation, then performs a check over the internet. Once details have been entered and validated, a small "licence" file is placed in the application's folder.

The unlock code can be applied on any computer owned by the school that has placed the order. An unlock code must not be shared between schools - this would breach the licence terms and may mean we cancel the unlock code.

What happens when the unlock code expires?

Calcul:8 reverts to being unregistered. However, you can always contact us to request another year's unlock code at any time, or click on Request Unlock Code in the About Calcul:8 screen.

Can you cancel an unlock code?

We reserve the right to cancel an unlock code if it appears to be used in a fraudulent manner. We will always contact the school who placed the order first to attempt to resolve the problem, and probably issue a replacement.

System Requirements

Does Calcul:8 need an internet connection?

If Calcul:8 detects a licence file, then it will attempt to connect to our website in order to validate the details. If no such connection can be made, then Calcul:8 will not start.

If Calcul:8 cannot detect a licence file then Calcul:8 does try to log the fact that it's being used - although online help will not be available.

What information is passed over the internet?

Every time the software starts or a new unlock code is applied, the software passes your registration number and the unlock code to our website. These details are date-stamped and logged on our database, in order to verify that the unlock code is still current. Once the unlock code is verified, a small file containing the registration details, details of the latest available version of the software and the value added measures is transferred back.

For registered users of the software we offer the ability to validate QAN codes, in which case every time the validation routine is requested a list of exam details entered into your system is passed to our website, and list of validated exam details passed back. We do not store the exam details that have been passed for validation.

We do not capture or transmit any pupil information whatsoever - the only information transmitted is to do with validating the software or the qualifications you have entered.

Does the software pull data directly from SIMS or any other information system?

Not yet, although this is an option we are investigating. Currently the software needs you to extract a broadsheet containing the exams sat by pupils.

What operating systems does Calcul:8 run on?

Calcul:8 will run on any version of Microsoft Windows from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Older versions of Calcul:8 did run on Windows XP and Windows Vista but, due to Microsoft dropping support for those operating systems and the requirements of the .net framework, the new versions of Calcul:8 don't.

There are no plans to develop a version of Calcul:8 that runs on Linux, Android or iOS.

What's Calcul:8 written in?

Calcul:8 is currently written in Microsoft Visual Basic .net environment, using version 4.5.2 of the .net framework.

Data Requirements

Does Calcul:8 work with exams other than GCSEs?

Yes. Calcul:8 copes with all qualifications that count for Progress 8, including BTEC, AS, European Computing Driving Licence and VCerts, and scores the grades appropriately. For qualifications that Ofsted mark as "none of the above" you can define the grades achieved and their corresponding points allocation.

Does Calcul:8 use the revised rules published by DfE in February 2015?

Yes. Calcul:8 now requires all exam subjects to be allocated an exam family, and only one exam per exam family will count, and AS levels will always supercede higher-graded GCSEs.

Does Calcul:8 work with projected exam results?

Yes. This is the main reason why it has been written. Calcul:8 will cope with projections that are either simply graded (A* to G for GCSE; D, M or P for BTEC) or fine-graded (A*1 to G3 / A*a to Gc). (Fine grading indicates a degree of certainty over attaining a grade; for example a C2 or Cb is a confident C, a C3 or Cc should gain a C but may slip to a D, and a C1 or Ca should get a C but may go up to an B. Calcul:8 also copes with the A+/A/A- style of fine-grading.)

How can I specify fine-grading?

Calcul:8 will understand any grade for an exam ending in 1, 2 or 3, or + and - as being fine-graded. This includes grades like A*- or C3. Calcul:8 will not cope if you mix grades and attainment levels (for example, D- and 8c) - make sure you use grades.

How does Calcul:8 use Key Stage 2 results?

Calcul:8 takes the Key Stage 2 England and Maths results, either as sub-levels (3c, 3b, 3a, 4c, ... 6b, 6a) or as fine-grades (3.1, 3.3, 3.5, ... 6.7, 6.9) and calculates the average Key Stage 2 result from them for each pupil. It then uses this to look up what the expected Key Stage 4 attainment is. Calcul:8 doesn't currently use raw scores for Key Stage 2 results.

Miscellaneous

Does Calcul:8 have any help facilities?

Yes. Calcul:8 connects to the internet for online help, and different pages are available for each screen in the software. We don't provide a manual or a local online help facility.

Is Calcul:8 only for state schools?

No. Calcul:8 can be used by any secondary school that enters pupils for GCSE exams or their equivalents, and will be measured using the Progress 8 score by DfE and Ofsted.

Do you sell Calcul:8 outside England?

We can, but we're not sure why you would want it!

How frequently will Calcul:8 be upgraded?

This is currently unknown. Registered versions of Calcul:8 will check to see if a newer version is available each time it starts, and will prompt you to download the latest version if an upgrade is available. We will endeavour to fix any issues with the software as soon as we are aware of them. We will endeavour to hold correct information sourced from the DfE at all times.

Do you have a proposed development pathway

Yes, but we only promote software and functionality we currently deliver. If you have a requirement, please talk with us.

I have an idea for Calcul:8. Would you be interested?

Yes! Please let us know by emailing our support desk. With our other software we find that most of the useful enhancements come from customer requests. While we cannot guarantee to implement every idea that comes our way, we will look at each one carefully.

If all else fails

As experienced software developers, we know that some users will always stumble across something we haven't covered in the FAQs. In those instances, you can contact our support desk by emailing support@calcul-8.co.uk, and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can.
